Wednesday Wishes

This morning was the first morning in a while that i woke up to crisp cool morning air. I took advantage of the morning coolness to take a short walk around the property and drink a cup of coffee. I got talking with my mom and we came up with so many projects that my mind wont stop jumping from one thing to next. I want to do them ALL.
The house we are living in could use a few updates and a lot less furniture. My new office (I returned to work as a counselor for 2 evenings a week, eeks) needs some serious love to make it feel a little more comfortable. Our shop needs some attention. My wardrobe since returning to work is looking pretty sad. I was promoted to counselor while 4 months pregnant so all of my work clothes have elastic on them somewhere, its not pretty.
So as my baby takes an extra long nap and my eyes and fingers are sore from knitting, I find myself sitting here dreaming about all of the things to work on. Here are are some things i am wishing for:

Our bedroom is floor to ceiling wood walls that are currently stained an oranging color. I am hoping to find the time to paint them all cream. I am also liking the light grey in this picture!

What a fun and cheap way to fill up some empty wall space in my office!

To find some comfortable and cute work clothes (without elastic waistbands)

Fall please

The last several days have been between 100-108 degrees outside. Inside my house has been averaging about 85 degrees. The heat has left me pining after fall, hoping against hope for a sudden drop in temperature, an excuse to wear a cozy sweater and boots. I find myself dreaming of all things fall.

Fall scented candles

cozy fall clothes on crisp days

Snuggling up to one of these with a good book and a cup of tea

All this thinking of fall reminded me of a fall project I started before Jude was born.

I started this sweater in my last trimester of pregnancy. It is a lovely pattern from Debbie bliss. I knew myself well enough to know that i would not have the sweater ready for baby right away so I planned to have it done by this fall and started making it 9m size.
I found my yarn at a great little yarn shop in Hemet Ca. There are not many great things in Hemet, but the Lazy Daisy on E. Florida is one of them. The shop does not have a website but if your in the area and like to knit (or crochet) you should check it out. The store is small but packed floor to ceiling with gorgeous yarns of all types. The owner is one of the most helpful ladies i have ever meet. When you walk in the store you will most likely see here sitting on a couch working on her own knitting project. The amount of math this lady can do in her head when it comes to figuring out patterns, yarn sizes and number of stitches is amazing. So in Dec. of last year I waddled out of this shop with nice green yarn and hopes of having much of the sweater done by the time baby arrived.

He is now 6m old and months away from being able to wear this sweater and this is how far I am
I made it over half way up the back piece. I have need to get serious about this to have it done in time as this is my first 'big' project and I'm not always great at following. I know what i will be doing during nap times for a while!

do you doula?

This last weekend has felt like a Marathon to me. I attended a DONA doula training, spent much time away from the baby, and worked on getting him to sleep through the night. I entered this week with one thing on my mind.

Throughout the weekend I experienced many emotions. Watching birth videos I laughed and even cried. I was overwhelmed remembering the feelings of giving birth, mourned the things that did not go as planned, and remembered the joy of meeting my son.

With a doula, statistics shows that labouring women have : 25% shorter labors, 60% reduction in epidural use, 50% reduction in cesareans and 40% reduction in pitocin.

I can not wait to be a doula! I can not wait to support women in what might be one of the most memorable and significant moments in their life.

change

Things have been pretty different since we moved. In Carlsbad I had fast internet, TV, the ocean, local coffee shops and farmers market within walking distance, and any grocery stores or other stores I would want within 5 mins driving from our house.
I have been so busy that i have not yet had time to really feel how different it is, but there are few things that jump out right away when living in the country and announce change. Our first day here we found a black widdow on the crib we were setting up for Jude. Scary.
While by the beach i might go for a walk, get a decaf coffee and stroll by the beach, passing many people and smiling hello. The other day I went for a mile walk on a dusty dirt road to the mail box and saw one old man in a beat up truck. I can go days withou seeing anyone that I am not directly related to.

Here we have no people, a 30 min drive to the nearest store, no TV, slow internet, and lots of bugs. I think this change is good for me. Sometimes I find myself burried in distractions, unable to function without something going on, the noise of the TV or the hum of many people walking by. Here I sit on my porch in the morning and stare at the distant mountains and hear nothing but the dogs. At night we can see the stars.

walking down the driveway

So there is a lot of change. Last week we found a rattlesnake on the porch, today there was a turkey vulture. I'm happy to be here. Happy to have time to think. To feel once again closer to nature. To get a break from my 'distractions'.

right outside the house, he had some wing problems

market done!

We did it! We went to our first craft market and did pretty well. We had to leave at 4:30am to set up the booth and get it ready for the market, but it was worth it.
We talked to a lot of the vendors and while there where a few who did amazingly well, like this one, it seemed like we were right in the middle as far as sales go. It was such a good experience to go and see what people bought and learn about the best way to display our items.

Also this weekend Jude had his first solid meal! No better way to end a busy weekend then to laugh at your baby making faces as he eats his first avocado.

excited to eat finally!

not so sure about the taste

busy bees

This last week has been a whirlwind of activity for us. We have been settling in to the new house, I have been picking up a few shifts at work, attending my first doula meeting, and preparing for the Queen Bee Market that is now only 1 week away!

We have been battling heat, sewing till our machine breaks, and setting up our dislplay. I wanted to share pictures but my husband 'unpacked' while i was at work yesterday and I cant find the camera. Pictures to come.
